Tokushima Zoo is known for one of Japan's largest capybara groups. Since April 2025, capybaras have been shown both in the existing savanna area and the former elephant paddock, and the zoo lists a daily feeding program around 13:00 at the savanna deck. It is a major destination for seeing a large capybara family in spacious outdoor enclosures.
Shirotori Zoo in Kagawa Prefecture, known as the 'free-style zoo,' keeps capybaras across three separate paddocks. Visitors can feed and interact with them over the fence, and a capybara hot spring event is held in winter.
